10 Overlooked Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episodes That Are Secretly Classics

8. Primeval (Season 4, Episode 21)

Let's face it, season four of Buffy is a complete mess - an unusually sloppy entry to the series canon that was marred by behind-the-scenes issues and a general lack of focus.

As a result, this season's main arc felt secondary to everything else. Yet despite this, its penultimate episode Primeval is a real highlight that rarely gets the credit it deserves.

Focusing on the Scooby Gang's final battle with the cybernetic-demonoid Adam, this episode goes back to what made the previous seasons so great and made a last-ditch attempt to resolve The Initiative storyline in a satisfactory way.

The explosive battle within The Initiative expanded on season three's large-scale set-pieces in spectacular new ways, the core-four Scooby Gang members get their time to shine, and even Riley doesn't suck in this episode - so it's a win all round.

For many it's too-little-too-late, but for all of its sins, Primeval is a fantastic episode that's merely tarnished by what came before it. It's the closest that season four comes to matching the dizzying heights of previous seasons and an indicator of what this season could have been if those at the reigns had a better idea of what to do.
