10 Overlooked Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episodes That Are Secretly Classics
3. Forever (Season 5, Episode 17)
Forever is in the unfortunate position of being the follow-up to The Body, an episode that never fails to break viewer's hearts no matter how many times they see it. Whilst it can't match the sheer emotional assault of its predecessor, Forever acts as the perfect hangover showing us how the lingering effects of grief can be just as traumatic.
The episode doesn't shy away from grim reality and focuses on Buffy's best efforts to remain strong for the sake of those around her, whilst Dawn seeks to use dark magic to restore their mother to life.
Much like The Body, Forever is light on action but doesn't lack any of the intensity. Both Sarah Michelle-Gellar and Michelle Trachtenberg deliver knock-out performances throughout and their pain and suffering is never anything less than gripping and heartbreaking in equal measure.
It all culminates in one of the show's most emotionally charged and frankly exhausting finales, but one that's so incredibly necessary for both characters to grow and move on from the tragic loss of their mother. Whilst The Body may get all the praise and attention it rightly deserves, Forever will always be quietly brilliant in its own way.
