10 Overlooked TV Shows You Should Watch

5. Bottom

Millennium tv show
BBC

In the roll call of great alternative comedy, Bottom seldom gets a mention as often as The Young Ones or other such offerings and that is frankly an injustice. Set in a squalid Hammersmith flat, Bottom sees Richie (Rik Mayall) and Eddie (Adrian Edmondson) as two jobless and largely penniless, pathetic loser flatmates as they spend most of their time either fighting or trying helplessly to sleep with people.

Bottom's fusion of dark humour and slapstick violence is something of a natural development of the duos usual fair. However, perhaps in part due to being planned whilst the two were preparing for their West End production of Samuel Beckett's absurdist play Waiting for Godot, Bottom refines the formula and makes something far more special out of it.

Bottom manages to take that staple of absurdist theatre - the play where nothing happens - and fuse it with the sort of violence you see in Tom and Jerry. Before I lapse into pretentiousness, I should point out that Bottom is purely and simply awfully funny; rude, crude, and absolutely excellent. It deserves to be seen by all comedy fans.
