10 Overlooked TV Shows You Should Watch

6. The Prisoner (1967)

Millennium tv show
ITV

The Prisoner has the regrettable distinction of being a series more often talked about that actually watched. This is perhaps because Patrick McGoohan's surreal, Avantgarde espionage-science fiction series is one of the most challenging television series ever devised, never mind filmed. The Prisoner is a true trip from the 60s and is far more daring than countless contemporary shows.

The plot tells the tale of an unnamed British man (McGoohan) who abruptly resigns from his job, ostensibly a secret service post, and attempts to hurriedly flee before being gassed. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a strange coastal village, where everyone is assigned a number. Newly christened as Number Six, the series follows his attempts to escape the village as well as the hallucinatory interrogations to which he is subjected by the authorities to extract information, all the while he stoutly refuses to accept his new identity.

The Prisoner is beyond daring; it's positively bonkers. Few shows could strip so much certainty whilst remaining compelling. You don't even know the main character's name beyond his refusal to be labelled as a mere number. All in all, The Prisoner marks one of televisual science fictions high points.
