4. It Treats Its Audience Like Idiots
Family Guy often takes the opportunity to give its two cents on relevant social and/or political issues. And while their progressive views are often sound, whether or not you agree with their points is not the issue. The issue comes with how incredibly heavy-handed it can be. Subtly is an absolute mystery to the writers of this show, as they can't seem to get any sort of message across without doing it in the most preachy way possible.
They assume so little intelligence on the part of the viewer that the feel they have to be this overt with their commentary, which just goes to show how highly Seth MacFarlane and the writers think of their audience. Well, that or they just can't be bothered to convey their message in a clever way, which is just as bad.
Moreover, them treating viewers like morons can be tied into previous points, such as how they make no effort to build on characters or come up with original jokes, yet expect people to keep coming back anyway. This is especially inexcusable when you consider that even most children's shows these days treat their audience with more respect than Family Guy ever has.
