10 Reasons A Friends Movie Would Be A Terrible Idea
5. The Characters Would Have To Be Set In Their Ways
Part of the appeal of the show was that the crew were in their early twenties and were starting to make the big decisions. This meant that the show could be shaken up relatively easily and without much criticism or any repercussions (look at Chandler's career change for proof). The characters would be at least forty by now, and heading towards middle age would mean that they have made their important decisions. Throughout the show important questions about who they should go out with, what career they want, and whether they want a family dominated the program. By now these choices would have been firmly made and we would have to watch the outcome of these decisions. This could be positive, but the magic of Friends was that we didnt find out what happened; we could make our own minds up, and this left the show in a perfect equilibrium that remains unaltered. Joey's reluctance to turn thirty illustrates this issue; in your twenties you are still developing, by your thirties you are meant to have some idea of what you want to do. A movie would provide us with certain answers as to whether Monica and Chandler were decent parents, or whether Ross and Rachel actually did make it as a couple. This would ruin the show, and we would hate to see such a great show be squandered for the sake of a movie.
