10 Reasons You Should Give Agents Of SHIELD Another Chance
9. We Know (And Like) The Characters Now
Each member of the main cast was met with a generally lukewarm response when the series bowed, with the exception of the already fondly-regarded Agent Coulson, and the show's next few episodes didn't to much to change that opinion for the better as they were mainly plot-heavy affairs; high on action, low on character-building. Many an unkind word has been said about each of the characters: Agent Ward's bland, cookie-cutter action hero; Fitz and Simmons, too quirky and sleight to actually matter; Skye, the most annoying of the bunch, taking Whedon-snark to new, almost parodic heights and showing a cockiness that didn't endear so much as enrage fans; even May, generally the most well-received of the new cast due to her consistent badassery, suffered from a lack of deep characterisation that gave her near-Michonne levels of shallow scowliness. Thankfully, for the most part all of those issues have been resolved. Ward and May have been able to show softer sides to themselves through their relationship with each other and to their fellow crewmates; May with Coulson and Ward with Skye, both demonstrating that they are capable of pulling off an interaction that doesn't end in a kick to the face. Fitz and Simmons have both been given expanded roles on the team and have each separately been a central focus of certain episode, and their true worth has certainly been illuminated when their lives are put in danger. Even Skye, the most maligned of the cast, has learned a few lessons in humility and generally toning her attitude down - and it certainly doesn't hurt that her backstory has been expanded to a point where we're more capable of feeling empathy for her. Put simply, the more we see of these characters, the more it is to like and care about them.
