2. Mishandling Of Serious Issues
Back in its first season, Glee was a rather light hearted comedy, dabbling in some relatively serious issues such as teen pregnancy and hysterical pregnancies. And then... domestic violence and attempted suicides. That wouldnt be an issue if they at least handled these issues appropriately. Karofskys attempted suicide had about two minutes of build up in a previous episode, and then came out of nowhere. The scene itself was emotional and hard hitting... but then completely ignored. After the episode had aired, the writers said that Karofsky might not come back. We werent shown his recovery period or how hes dealing with life now. He was merely used to create some buzz. And Biestes domestic violence storyline was outright offensive. Introduced by some throwaway gag by Santana, we were sent on a rollercoaster that gave us an insight into Biestes turbulent home life. There was no build up whatsoever, and despite being a very serious matter, the storyline seemingly played second fiddle to Rachel choking at her NYADA audition. If Glee are going to highlight such traumatic and serious issues, they should at least be dealt with accordingly, and not compared to high school dramas such as failing a school test.
