With Being Human, the US took an original UK concept and pared it down into something truly special. Following a werewolf, a vampire, and a ghost all sharing a house, the UK’s Being Human was a fun but scattershot sci-fi drama that constantly expanded its sci-fi world as time went on. In comparison, while the US version took on the original concept verbatim, it smartly grounded things to an essential degree and became one of the very best science fiction shows on television.

Over the course of four seasons, the US version of Being Human featured one of the best casts on TV (Sam Witwer, Meaghan Rath, and Sam Huntington), and was incredibly funny all while being dreadfully dark. The twists and turns were second to nothing else on television at the time, and the US storytelling simply gave more humanity to its characters than the UK version ever could.

While the UK version seemed intent on expanding its universe and adding new cast members and new sci-fi tropes, the US version wisely stayed focused on the characters from the beginning, and as a result all four seasons of the show tell an intricately plotted story that’s as much about humans as it is about monsters.
