8. "Old Acquaintances" - The Walking Dead: Dead City

The Walking Dead's live-action universe ironically mirrors the nature of its eponymous antagonists - it simply won't die.

The conclusion of the show's final season was followed with spin-offs set in the same universe in such rapid-fire fashion that it's natural to question why AMC even "ended" proceedings in the first place - the original hadn't even finished airing before news of these follow-ups broke.

The Walking Dead: Dead City focuses on the unlikely alliance between Maggie Greene and Negan. Following the uninspiring nature of previous offshoots in the vein of Fear The Walking Dead and World Beyond, many fans may have been apprehensive of another AMC zombie-centric damp squib.

Fortunately, the show's debut episode, "Old Acquaintances", goes a long way towards dispelling such concerns. Depicting the beginning of Maggie's search for her kidnapped son Hershel, Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan shine in their lead roles. Despite not having a great deal to do, the familiar friction between the pair is as plain as day.

The episode also benefits from a completely new environment, with the chaotic ruins of Manhattan providing a vast blank canvas for the showrunners to work with. Factor in the introduction of Dead City's Big Bad in the Croat and one is left with a doozy of a curtain raiser.

For anyone questioning whether AMC's post-Walking Dead world is worth a watch, "Old Acquaintances" is Dead City's must-see instalment.
