Receiving a tidal wave of critical acclaim and Emmy nominations, the third instalment of HBO's take on The Last of Us - "Long, Long Time" - is overwhelmingly regarded as the show's best episode.

With that being said, when it comes to HBO's must-see chapter for Naughty Dog fanatics, there can only be one - "When We Are In Need". The first season's penultimate offering follows Ellie's capture by cannibalistic preacher David and Joel's desperate attempts to save her.

Director Ali Abbasi's production is a staggering piece of television. Featuring exemplary performances and cinematography, the first season's eighth outing is largely carried by the unnerving presence of Scott Shepherd's David. This is due in no small part to the actor's innate ability to imbue fairly generic villainous dialogue with a notable aura of dread.

Much of the dialogue is lifted verbatim from the games, while many of the scenes play out as a live-action mirror version of Naughty Dog's canon. Troy Baker - the voice of the original Joel - even features in a wonderful cameo role as David's lead henchman.

Topping matters off with a reunion between Ellie and Joel that would bring a Viking to tears, "When We Are In Need" is an unabated triumph.
