10 Revived Doctor Who Episodes That Are Perfect For A Rainy Day
6. 42
Things are often - nay, always - escalating rather quickly in the weird and wonderful worlds of Doctor Who but this episode takes it to the extreme... and then some. It's an often heard criticism that the series is hindered by its allocated 45 minutes but this is an example of it being utilised to its best effect in a real time adventure which cranks the tension levels up to a whole other level. To put it simply, things get very hot. Well, the Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones do find themselves aboard the S.S. Pentallian as it hurtles uncontrollably towards a devouring alien star, so they can be forgiven for getting a bit sweaty. In some cases 42 is too hot to even handle, though, as it's usually overlooked as far as 'the bigger picture' of Series 3 is concerned. Saying that, there's really nothing to not enjoy here with an amplitude of great guest stars, led by Michelle Collins as the spacecraft's captain Kath McDonnell, brilliant special effects and the high octane execution of a generally interesting premise wherein the Doctor has just 42 minutes to save the ship and its crew. See what the title's getting at now? As always the titular Time Lord excels under pressure and if you're stuck indoors and searching for an adrenaline-inducing escapade which unravels at a somewhat remarkable pace, look no further. Just don't look directly at the sun, unless you want to be a living embodiment of Stars In Their Eyes. Tonight, Matthew, I'm going to be... infected.
