10 Saddest Doctor Who Companion Departures

5. Adric

Adric was probably one of Doctor Who's more annoying companions. He wasn't very popular and his attitude was patronising, condescending and he was basically a brat. However, the thing that really hits hard about his time on the show is that it ends with a massive tragedy - one like Doctor Who had never seen before.

As he tried to stop a ship crashing into the Earth. Of course, it all goes wrong when the dying Cyber Leader shoots the console and Adric is unable to fix the ship. His simple "Now I'll never know if I was right," line is so sad because had he been given the opportunity to be uninterrupted he might have been able to succeed.

The episode ends with Adric accepting his fate, as the Earth comes in closer on the screen. It cuts to the TARDIS where the gang see the ship explode. Nyssa and Tegan scream out and embrace each other and the Doctor can't process what just happened.

What made it even more shocking was that the final credits rolled in silence over a picture of Adric's signature star, shattered into pieces.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
