10 Saddest Doctor Who Companion Departures

4. Amy And Rory

Amy and Rory became huge parts of the Eleventh Doctor's life. Initially friends and companions, they found themselves to be his in-laws after some shocking twists and revelations. They were a close-knit group and had a wonderful dynamic together, so their eventual departure was guaranteed to hurt.

When the Weeping Angels sent Rory back in time, the Doctor and Amy went back to find him which leads to a massive emotional climax where the couple jump off a building so that their deaths will create a paradox to destroy the angels. When that works, they find themselves back in a graveyard and Rory spots his name on a grave. As he calls Amy to look he is caught by an Angel and sent back again.

In the following moments, Amy decides to get sent back too so she can be with Rory. The Doctor is crying, Amy is crying. River encourages her. As Amy says "Raggedy man, goodbye," she turns around and the Angel touches her. The Doctor breaks down and River is there to comfort him as Amy's name appears on the gravestone with Rory's. It's so painful on so many levels but it's a strange one. It's sad for us to say goodbye, but at least they got to have their lives together.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
