Bea’s Alzheimer’s has already featured here, but her whole arc dates back to her childhood, when we see her mother lobotomised after the death of Crackerjack, Bea’s mother.

Underrated episode The Old Sugarman Place isn’t always held in as high a regard as the big BoJack classics, but it really should be. Mixing between BoJack rebuilding the old house and the flashbacks to his grandparents still living in it, it has some of the best sequences in the show, wrapped up in a heart wrenching story.

Though the current story of BoJack being helped by a lonely old fly who blames himself for his wife’s death is sad, it’s the flashback which comes with all guns blazing. BoJack’s grandparents initially seem to have a happy life, before Crackerjack’s death in the war.

After that, with his grandmother distraught and grandfather cold and unfeeling, things quickly fall apart. His grandmother can’t stand the celebrations of the war ending, and after ‘making a spectacle’ of herself in her anguish, her husband has her lobotomised.

It brings a chilling new meaning to her catchphrase “I have half a mind to kiss you”, as that’s all she ends the episode with.
