10 Scariest Sci-Fi TV Shows Of All Time

3. The X-Files

Few series have brought as many concepts into one story the way The X-Files did. Originally running from 1993 to 2002, the series came back with new episodes airing in 2016 and 2018. There were also two feature films, but The X-Files is one of those stories that functions much better as a series.

FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were charged with investigating a seemingly endless array of unexplainable phenomenon. Well, unexplainable if you choose not to believe. But a large percentage of the ongoing story was devoted to a vast government conspiracy involving extraterrestrial life on Earth.

There were also several "monster of the week" episodes that featured all manner of creatures and killers, such as Flukeman. One of the most unsettling episodes featured Mulder, Scully and a few innocent people as a swarm of glowing green insects fed on them. It was scary because it actually felt like it could have been real.
