10 Science Fiction TV Episodes To Watch While Pregnant
2. Battlestar Galactica The Farm
"The Farm" is perhaps the most serious and terrifying entry on this list. Being pregnant, whether planned or not, can sometimes feel like something is invading your body. I remember in the beginning of pregnancy having an almost alien feeling towards the new bump on my belly, and an almost claustrophobic uneasiness when I knew that it wasn't going to come off anytime soon. The feeling passed over time, but I can watch this episode and look back on that part of my pregnancy very clearly. This concept of bodily invasion is taken on a more literal level in this episode of Battlestar Galactica. When Kara "Starbuck" Thrace suddenly wakes up in a hospital room with a doctor she does not know, she immediately becomes suspicious. Though he swears that he is not a Cylon (the villains of the series, robots that can sometimes make themselves to look human), it does not shake her concern, especially when he begins to ask Starbuck about becoming pregnant, calling childbearing women a "precious commodity". Starbuck eventually escapes and learns that she is in a farm-like facility, where women are captured and hooked up to a machine in order to be impregnated with Cylon children. She destroys the machine after hearing the pleas of one of the women, putting them out of their misery. Though "The Farm" offers a rather bleak look at pregnancy, it has the capacity to show pregnant women that we are not just machines made to dispense out babies. We also deserve to take our own needs into mind, and take care of ourselves while also taking care of the little one inside us.
