10 Science Fiction TV Episodes To Watch While Pregnant

3. Star Trek: The Next Generation €“ The Child

Even before the birth of her child a mother can fear that things are moving too fast, that soon her child will be older and all the exciting memories of growing up will be left behind. I myself have already purchased a baby book and plan on recording every little event that happens in the hope of treasuring these memories before time passes by. For Deanna Troi, this worry takes on a whole new level. An alien entity impregnates her unexpectedly, the foetus growing at an alarming rate. Just 36 hours later she gives birth, but the baby's accelerated growth doesn't stop there. By the time Captain Picard comes to visit them he has already grown into a small child. It is heartbreaking to see Troi struggling to accept the fact that her child Ian is growing quickly, and even the fact that she has a child at all (as the episode only takes course over a few days). In a way it is an exaggerated look at how mothers see their children €“ to them it seems like a lifetime, but to the mother it seems like just moments ago they were still in the womb. The episode takes a tragic turn in the end as Ian sacrifices himself to save the ship, as he is the entity causing the ship's catastrophic problems. He explains that his species are life-force entities and that he wished to feel what it was like to live as a person. He chose perhaps the best way, by observing a mother and the way she processes the life of the child she loves.
