2. A Silent Gunther

Over time, Gunther became one of the most popular supporting characters in the show’s history. Outside of the six main characters, nobody appeared in more episodes of the sitcom than the bleached blonde coffee house owner.

However, the original plan was for Gunther to never utter a word.

Initially hired as an extra, largely due to the fact he knew how to serve coffee, Gunther was seen but never heard in the first season of the show and didn’t get a line until Season 2. He would simply appear in the background of scenes while the gang went about their business in Central Perk.

Eventually, the producers changed their mind and Gunther went on to become a beloved character and have numerous memorable moments throughout the series. Mainly centring around his petty rivalry with Ross due to his unwavering love for Rachel.
