9. Star Trek: Phase II

It's actually not entirely accurate to say that you never got to see Star Trek: Phase II, as the vast majority of its creative DNA wound up in other Star Trek projects along the years. The premise though, and indeed the major element of this that never got made, was that of providing a direct sequel to the original TV series set, like the real world, some 10 years in the future.

Among the concepts you'll be fairly familiar with, characters Will Decker and the Deltan Ilya were written into the crew, the above design of the new USS Enterprise was created, and several scripts for episodes were written. Among them, a special 2-hour long pilot 'In Thy Image' which saw a giant vessel voyaging across space to find its creator on earth, and two others entitled "The Child" and "Devil's Due".

The pilot would up being Star Trek: The Motion Picture, with Decker and Ilya's names appearing there and their original character descriptions leading to Will Riker and Deanna Troi. The ship's design inspired the USS Discovery on the show of the same name, and both "The Child" and "Devil's Due" would up being episodes of The Next Generation.
