1988's A Death in the Family arc is one of the most iconic stories in the history of Batman.

For those maybe not entirely familiar with that tale, A Death in the Family resulted in Jason Todd being brutally murdered by the Joker. Beaten to a bloody pulp with a crowbar, the Harlequin of Hate then left Todd's battered body in a building that would shortly explode.

In unique move, DC Comics actually left the fate of Jason up to readers to decide, with a phone-in vote resulting in Jason Todd being killed off.

That death would have ramifications for the world of Bruce Wayne and Batman for decades to come, with the Dark Knight paying his respects to Jason by housing his Robin outfit in the Batcave - along with the words "A Good Soldier."

From the comics, to animation, to even on the big-screen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the haunting sight of the deceased second Robin's uniform has been seen.

Even since Jason miraculously returned from the grave in 2005's Under the Hood, the outfit of the fallen Robin can still be seen in the Batcave as a reminder of this most jarring of moments in Batman to this day.
