10 Secrets We Learned From Doctor Who Season 17 Boxed Set
5. K-9's Written A Memoir
The Matthew Sweet-hosted In Conversation features are always a highlight of each of these new Blu-ray boxed sets. The Season 17 set is no exception, featuring an interview with Bob Baker, the co-creator of K9 and co-writer of Wallace & Gromit.
Hilariously, Bob can't remember whether it was he or writing partner Dave Martin who came up with the idea for the robot dog. All he remembers was that the idea came up after a trip to the pub! Either way, Baker talks of his love for the Doctor's canine companion and disappointment that a lot of writers often used him as a weapon rather than a character in his own right. Over the course of this discussion, he reveals that during lockdown, he wrote a book from the perspective of K9 - giving the character's perspective on a lot of their previous adventures.
As Bob Baker very sadly passed away earlier this year, it's not clear on the status of this unpublished memoir. Hopefully it's not doomed to languish in production hell like the proposed K9: Timequake movie. Regardless, this final feature length interview is a great tribute to one of Doctor Who's most creative writing partnerships and has a hilariously unexpected climax.
