Since Dexter is about a serial killer, people are constantly getting murdered by the title character. The kick is that Dexter kills other killers who are usually despicable people. Season 4 dealt with the most vile killer of them all: the Trinity Killer (played with creepy magnificence by John Lithgow). This guy was in the same situation as Dexter. He was a seemingly normal family man who was secretly a serial killer. Dexter thought he could learn some tricks of the trade from Trinity, but he soon found out that this guy was a monstrous psychopath who needed to die. Unfortunately for Dexter, he waited too long to get rid of Trinity. He finally got him on his table, wrapped him in plastic and killed him in his signature way. What he and the audience didn't know was that Trinity had already paid a visit to his house beforehand. Dexter returned to his house ready to join his wife Rita and son Harrison for a nice vacation, but found a message on his phone from Rita that said she had returned to the house. In a shocking season finale twist, he found Rita dead in her bathtub with Harrison crying in a pool of blood, mirroring how Dexter was found when his own mother was murdered. This was a disturbing and shocking jolt in the series as the purely innocent Rita was one of the only people capable of bringing out Dexter's humanity. Her shocking death was a striking blow to both Dex and the viewers, and it left us itching to know how the aftermath would play out in the next season.
