6. The Capitol City Goofball And The Philly Phanatic
Sports' mascots are either beloved by the fans, or hated for cheapening the game. The Capital City Goofball seems to fall in the former category, as he is cheered (and his replacement, Dancin' Homer, booed) loudly by the fans of the Capital City Major League Baseball team, and is also voted into the state House of Representatives, despite his long, trumpet-like nose, furry mask, and round, baseball-covered bottom. Change the color of the fur from orange to green, remove the baseball, and change the baseball jersey to a Philadelphia Phillies, and you can see how The Capital City Goofball was inspired by The Philly Phanatic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu-7I9bqdUs The Philly Phanatic himself has appeared in episodes of The Simpsons. The Phanatic appeared in Season 20's episode "Gone Maggie Gone," welcoming a group of Spanish nuns to Philadelphia in the 1700s. Perhaps the inspiration for the Goofball in the Simpsons' universe comes from these now-extinct animals that roamed the lands of 18th-Century New England... or, more likely, he is stolen from the Phillies, and we'll leave it at that.
