Since Middle-Earth is teeming with all sorts of monstrosities including orcs, were-worms, goblins, Uruk-hai, muma-kils, Nazgul, and giant spiders, no one was surprised to see a savage beast make an appearance in the trailer.

So, what is this creature exactly? Because of its immense size and feral features, many speculate it is a troll or a Balrog. But due to the ice encrusted on this brute's shoulders and its protruding horns, some believe this may be something else entirely.

Because the original Dark Lord, Morgoth, had an army of monster-folk called the Uvanimor, it's possible this creature is one of his flock. Alternatively, this nasty beastie could be an ogre, which were mentioned sporadically throughout The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Even though we expect a few familiar monsters like the wargs or fellbeasts to make an appearance, this creature implies we will see many animals not yet seen in any Tolkien adaptation. After all, there are many creepy critters lurking in Tolkien's work yet to appear in any film or tv series including demons, turtle-fish, barrow-wights, nauglaths, The Two Watchers, and vampires. (Yes, Middle-Earth has vampires.)
