10 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching Dexter
9. The Getaway
The main antagonist of the fourth season is Arthur, the Trinity Killer, who shares some characteristics with the BTK killer in the real world, and is portrayed in a chilling and excellent performance by John Lithgow. In the season finale, "The Getaway", Dexter's secret life has been discovered by Arthur and Dexter has likewise realised who Arthur is.
When Arthur is finally captured by Dexter and knows he is about to be killed, they have a discussion that centres around their similarities and differences. There is one key line that is often overlooked because of a major point and twist that is revealed almost immediately after this scene, but here is the line that Dexter speaks : -
"So what's the alternative, Arthur? Leave? Disappear? Fake my own death and start over again?"
For fans who suffered through the seasons following this one and endured what has been largely touted as the worst final episode in any television series ever, they will recognise that this largely sarcastic line reflects almost exactly what Dexter ends up doing at the very end of season eight.
This line is often overlooked in favour of "it's already over" which is followed by Dexter discovering that Arthur has already murdered Rita.
