10 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching Dexter
5. A Little Reflection
A detail that would not so much be overlooked as missed entirely is a small nod to a real-life person hinted at in a key character name from season 8.
The main antagonist of the season is a killer known as "The Brain Surgeon" who removes brain tissue from all of his victims. His character name is Oliver Saxon and he is portrayed on the screen by Darri Ingolfsson.
Whether it is a deliberate choice or not, the name bears a resemblance to noted British neurologist Oliver Wolf Sacks. While his list of achievements and contributions to our understanding of how the mind works is long and storied, there is a particular part that has found its way into the mainstream.
The 1990 film "Awakenings" starring the late, great Robin Williams is a retelling of Sack's 1973 memoir of the same name, where he documented his efforts to use a revolutionary drug to "awake" people who were in various catatonic states. While the drug was instrumental, a large focus is on how these patients now have to adapt to a world that has moved on many decades in some cases and with these portions of their life missing.
He was awarded the CBE in 2008 and passed away in 2015.
