10 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching Dexter
4. Get Gellar
In season six, Professor James Gellar (played by Edward James Olmos) is an expert in End Times Mythology and plays the role of the main antagonist.
While the reveal that he has in fact been dead for almost three years is initially jarring to the viewer and a clever twist, on subsequent re-watching, there are many hints that can be picked up on to make this more obvious earlier on.
Much like The Sixth Sense and Tyler Durden in fight club, once you know that the character does not really exist, it becomes obvious that they never interact with the environment or other characters. His student, Travis, (who is responsible for killing him) suffers deep psychological issues and believes him to be alive, but he is more of a manifestation of Travis' darker urges.
This plays out subtly, initially at least, where you notice that Gellar never does anything physical at all. Travis is "made" to do any kind of interaction with people including handing over money when buying things. There is also a scene in the car where "Gellar" pushes down on Travis' leg to make him run over a woman.
Watching again and knowing the truth, these seem far more obvious than first time around.
