10 Smartest Doctor Who Characters

8. Romana

Doctor Who Omega
BBC Studios

Time Lady Romana first debuted on our screens in the Key to Time season, and we’ve since seen two incarnations. Mary Tamm, the first Romana, only took the job as she was promised a character who would match, if not surpass, the Doctor’s intellect.

Exceptionally clever, like all Time Lords, Romana attended the academy, and achieved a ‘triple first’. Romana’s grades where considerably better than the Doctor, and even when in her first incarnation, whilst the Doctor was in his Fourth, she saw him as inferior. Although, while she was vastly intelligent, she lacked experience of the universe.

On several times Romana proved her intelligence, such as when she assisted the Doctor in finding the key to time, her journey in E-space, and returning to Gallifrey and becoming its Lady President, the highest position for a Time Lord. If it weren’t for her intelligence, it’s unlikely Romana would have kept her position, during one of Gallifrey’s most unstable periods.
