Brilliant engineer and scourge of the laws of physics. Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, or Scotty to his friends, was one of the more colourful members of The Enterprise's original crew, and one which many fans have taken to their hearts.

Famously paternal to his ship, Scotty's ability to improvise his way around engineering impossibilities and find last-minute solutions saved the skin of the Enterprise crew on several occasions.

After The Animated Series and several movie appearances, Scotty would reappear in The Next Generation episode 'Relics', where he has crash-landed on a Dyson Sphere and, realising there would not be enough supplies to wait for rescue, jerry rigs a transporter to cycle him through the buffer until he can be rescued. This rescue, to his shock, would take another 75 years, and he finds himself in a world completely unlike his own, with engineering marvels more fantastical than he could have dreamed.

This is not the last we would see of the OG engineer though, as the crew of DS9 would encounter him when travelling to the past in 'Trials & Tribble-ations', and a holographic image of him would man engineering when Dal attempts the famously impossible 'Kobayashi Maru' in Prodigy - one last fitting tribute to one of sci-fi's handiest of men.
