In the fantastical world of Star Trek, no being is quite so fantastical as Q.

Named for both the 'man' and the species, Q is an omnipotent, god-like being who can bend time and reality to his will with the snap of his fingers, and delights in his playful teasing/terrorising of lesser species like humans. Originally putting humanity on trial in TNG's opening episode 'Encounter At Farpoint', Q takes a particular fondness to Captain Picard, teasing and prodding him relentlessly before unleashing the Borg to test the explorer's curiosity of this erstwhile Captain.

Following a one and done appearance on DS9, Q would find a new favourite plaything in the form of Katherine Janeway, Captain of the USS Voyager, and brings everything from civil war to parenthood to her doorstep, expecting her to clean it all up.

Short of some playful appearances aboard the USS Cerritos in Lower Decks, this is the last we would see of Q for some time. This would all change with the Picard season 2 trailer, however, as John de Lancie's smiling face appears in the captain's mirror, gleefully repeating: 'the trial never ends'.
