10 Star Trek Debates That Tear The Fandom Apart

1. Legacy

Anyone following Star Trek on social media over the last year will have seen the calls for a Star Trek: Legacy series to be commissioned by Paramount. TrekCulture has been among them - we’ve even designed our own logo for the show! This of course has been inspired by the third season of Star Trek: Picard, so this entry can be seen as an extension of that one, yet this point is more specific.

Legacy would, in a perfect world, follow the crew of the Enterprise-G or another contemporary Starfleet vessel in the 25th Century, thus continuing the era of Star Trek that combines everything from The Next Generation to Prodigy. Legacy would serve, at least initially, a single purpose: nostalgia. While that isn’t a reason not to do a thing, it cannot simply be the only reason.

The easy answer there, of course, is hire a good group of writers to create the stories for the show. Now, that begs the questions: who would the fandom be happy with? A very vocal section of the audience wants to see Terry Matalas return to run the series, but he has recently been announced as the show runner for Marvel’s Vision series, so it unlikely he would have the capacity to return.

Is this an all or nothing request? Alex Kurtzman serves as the head of Trek for Paramount (we could write an entire list on the debate over him) and so would naturally be in charge. There are those who would welcome this and those who would cry foul.

What is clear is that until the show is or isn’t announced, there will be fan casts - both in front and behind the camera - that will make some people happy, piss others off, and continue the cycle of debate on and on again.

You know the saying - the only worse than being talked about is not being talked about.
