9. Of Gods And Men - Vulcan Is Destroyed
Star Trek: Of Gods And Men was released in 2008, one year before J.J. Abrams' reboot of the franchise. In this fan film, Charles Evans uses the Guardian of Forever to take his revenge on Captain Kirk, cheated as he was the man's presumed death aboard the Enterprise-B. Evans succeeds in killing Kirk's mother in the past, creating an alternate timeline.
Already there are similarities here between the Abrams film and the fan film, though in the Kelvin production it was Kirk's father who bit the bullet. The similarities go further. In Abrams' film, the mad Romulan Nero drills into the surface of Vulcan, creating a path to the planet's core. He then delivers a device with Red Matter inside, creating a black hole at the planet's centre, destroying it.
In Of God's And Men, the alternate version of John Harriman attacks and destroys Vulcan, forcing Pavel Chekov to watch. The biggest difference between the two productions is that in the fan film, Uhura and Chekov manage to reset the timeline and undo these catastrophes, while in the Kelvin-universe Vulcan remains destroyed, with the rest of the galaxy in limbo until Star Trek 4 is finally produced.
