10 Star Trek Fan Concepts That Became Real

8. Star Trek: Renegades - Disappearing Dilithium

Star Trek: Renegades was the fan production that was produced by the same team that put together Of Gods And Men. Fittingly, Walter Koenig returned as Admiral Pavel Chekov, while Tim Russ also returned as Tuvok and several other alumni also featured in various roles. The premise was something that would eventually turn up in both Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery.

The band of 'renegades' that form the basis for the show are very similar to the make-up of the crew of La Sirena, operating outside the jurisdiction of Starfleet, though not exactly criminals either. However, the biggest concept that became reality with the idea of the disappearing crystals.

In Star Trek: Discovery's third season, The Burn has decimated warp travel throughout the Alpha Quadrant. It targeted Dilithium crystals, causing them to explode in the warp cores of their various ships. While the results are different in Renegades, the basic idea of something wrong with the main fuel of the galaxy is very similar.

Renegades ran into legal trouble with CBS after they announced that the film was in fact a pilot for a web series. In 2016, they were instructed to remove many of the overt Star Trek references from the story.
