10 Stargate SG-1 Fates Worse Than Death
8. Trapped In A Canopic Jar
Whilst the Goa'uld were known for their savage brutality and treatment of 'lesser species' such as the humans, they could be equally merciless against members of their own kind.
Take the System Lord Osiris as an example. Originally a high ranking member of Ra's court during the time when Earth was being enslaved, Osiris and his queen Isis stayed on the planet to rule whilst others would propagate the galaxy with harvested tribes. At the suggestion of Osiris' duplicitous brother Setesh, the pair attempted to overthrow Ra and claim positions as Supreme System Lords. The plan would be foiled, however, when Setesh betrayed them to Ra, in a bid to seize Osiris' kingdom for himself.
As punishment for this betrayal, Ra removes both Osiris and Isis from their hosts, a shameful insult with Goa'uld culture, and imprisons them in canopic jars. Capable of a stasis effect, the jars would keep the pair alive indefinitely during their incarceration, and Osiris would not be freed from his imprisonment for another 11,000 years, finding himself with no kingdom and at the mercy of his former slaves.
It's unclear how aware Osiris was during his imprisonment, but awakening in a world 11,000 removed from what you know must be a terrifying experience at the best of times and, in a society so fixated on power and status, waking up with nothing is another sting entirely.
