10 Supernatural Episodes Which Totally Broke The Mold
9. “Hunteri Heroici” (Season 8, Episode 8)
A security guard is crushed to death by an anvil (yes, you heard that right), while another man’s heart literally bursts from his chest when he falls in love. Oh, and there’s a talking cat. These are only some of the strange oddities that draw the brothers and angel-friend Castiel to investigate a nursing home. There, they discover an old psychic named Fred Jones, whose telekinetic abilities were once so powerful that he could manipulate reality itself.
Unfortunately, Fred has succumbed to dementia and reverted to his childhood love of cartoons, resulting in the natural laws of physics within a certain vicinity of himself conforming to what is called “cartoon physics.”
On the surface, the zany physical comedy of this episode is both striking and calls back to the nostalgia of early-morning Looney Tunes. After all, we get to see Dean battle a corrupt orderly using nothing more than a frying pan. But on a deeper level, this episode addresses issues of aging and mental illness, and how these problems can fundamentally upset the established reality of those suffering from them.
Those whose loved ones are suffering in said ways are only able to see the outside effects of those problems, just like Sam and Dean.
