10 Terrifying Anime Villains That Gave You Nightmares

5. Light Yagami - Death Note

Parasyte Monster
Shueisha, Viz Media

Wait, isn't Light Yagami the protagonist of Death Note? That he is, but protagonist doesn't always mean hero. What makes the series so great is rather than a heroic figure, someone like L for instance, the narrative follows a villainous one. A truly charismatic and despicable one at that.

Light would like himself and everyone else to believe that as Kira he will create a perfect world free from crime. A world where justice is the norm, not the exception. But, in reality it's all nothing more than a illusion. It was never about justice, it was about power. The death note gave him a chance to carve the world in his image, and he was willing to cut down anyone to do just that. He was a delusional maniac masquerading as a godlike savior.

The thing that puts Light up there with the most terrifying anime villains is that people like him exist. People who come across as charming and unassuming, but on the inside are self-adsorbed narcissists that only thing of others in terms of how they can use them. You could know a Light, be friends with a Light, and never for one second know what's really going on in their head until it's too late.

Don't let those boyish good looks and smooth moves fool you, Light Yagami is more monster than man.
