There was a huge amount of anticipation surrounding the release of X-Men '97 on Disney+, and the show more than delivered. Arguably the best series of the year, the continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series could have gone a number of ways - particularly with its villain - and made a surprising yet strong choice.

The showrunners could have brought in any number of antagonists from the original series to play the big bad, but while the likes of Magneto (Matthew Waterson), Bolivar Trask (Gavin Hammon), and Mister Sinister (Chris Britton) did play a role - with Apocalypse also being teased as the villain of season two - it was Theo James' Bastion who caused the X-Men their problems in the show's first chapter.

Bastion, an evolved sentinel looking to destroy humankind, played no part in the original cartoon, and yet still felt like a huge threat up there with the best the team has faced. As scary as the character was on screen, an easily missed detail arguably makes him even scarier.

Bastion was revealed to be the big bad in episode seven, however as confirmed by then-showrunner Beau DeMayo on X, he actually appeared in every episode of the series bar the third. This means that while he was manipulating things from the very beginning, audiences had already seen him no fewer than five times before ever knowing who he was.
