10 Terrifying Secrets Hidden In Huge TV Shows

6. Toby Was The Scranton Strangler - The Office

As was to be expected from a sitcom as typically lighthearted and fun as The Office, the show rarely delved into particularly heavy territory. Certainly, there were emotional moments, but outside of events like Jim and Pam (John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer) getting pregnant, or Michael Scott (Steve Carell) leaving, almost everything was done with comedy at the forefront.

Strangely, this was even the case when there was a serial killer on the loose. The Scranton Strangler was the subject of discussion in the Dunder Mifflin office on several occasions, and there have been persistent theories and thoughts since that the killer's true identity was Toby Flenderson (Paul Lieberstein).

Though many of these theories are based simply around the abuse Toby received on a daily basis, and the fact that he went to speak with the man convicted of the crimes after serving on the jury, The Office all but confirmed it was in fact Toby thanks to a few easily missed clues.

When the Strangler led the Scranton police on a car chase past Dunder Mifflin, the vehicle in question could previously be seen multiple times in the office car park, and while the entire staff was gripped by the chase, Toby was mysteriously missing. You could argue that he's just that forgettable that audiences didn't necessarily notice. Surely this cannot be a coincidence.

Add in the fact that the Strangler struck on the day Pam gave birth to Cece (as confirmed by the day's headline), it's more than likely this was Toby lashing out due to his unreciprocated feelings for the new mother.
