10 Things About October Faction That Make Absolutely No Sense

8. The Monsters Really Aren’t That Monstrous

Forget about whether they're bad people for a moment - these scary monsters and super creeps that Presidio protects the world from aren’t actually so tough, are they?

If these monsters are the things that go 'bump' in the night, it's almost certainly because they've tripped over their own feet. The formidable Alice Harlow aside, every last creature we meet is easily murdered in seconds by some generic paramilitary guys in black combat gear - the kind of opponents that, in any other narrative, would be the faceless NPCs the heroes take down in droves.

Presidio are supposed to be trained soldiers, but these fight scenes aren’t elaborately staged to demonstrate that combat superiority - they really just show us Fred and Deloris throwing themselves bodily at guys with dodgy prosthetics or CG fright-masks and coming out on top moments later.

The Allens don't have firepower or cunning strategy on their side in these scenes, either: yet in episode three: Deloris escapes ambush by an entire gang of vampires with nothing but a prison beating.

Likewise, famed monster killer Fred Allen himself is barely shown to be competent at all, always needing help with the least little thing. He’s described as being off his game, but the poorly executed flashbacks show us that he never had much game to begin with, and J.C. MacKenzie’s decision to play him as though perennially stoned doesn’t help.

The problem may be that there's no fight coordinator on the crew; but that's a production decision, which really makes this worse. They actively chose to neuter the show like this.
