10 Things Every Doctor Who Fan Does When A New Doctor Is Announced

1. Start Pondering Who The Next Doctor Will Be

The Doctor has been cast, production is about to begin and new series are on the horizon. Exciting times, sit back and enjoy the ride, and hope that Ncuti Gatwa is the Doctor for ages. Except, Doctor Who fans don't quite work like that. Perhaps appropriately for a series about time travel, Doctor Who fans are obsessed with the future. So much so that they can't always enjoy the present.

It's perhaps some form of lasting trauma from the shock departure of Christopher Eccleston, but fans seem more ready than ever to start speculating over who's next. It's this awareness of the show's mythology and the character's mortality that has led to the series often becoming inaccessible to a wider audience.

Tellingly, the casting announcement said that Ncuti Gatwa is the new Doctor Who. Not the Fourteenth, or sixteenth, or six millionth. He's not even the Doctor yet, and hopefully he'll play the role for a long time yet. For now, the future of the show is assured, and it's time to stop thinking about past or future Doctors. Enjoy where you are. It's what the Doctor Who would do.
