10 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Game Of Thrones
3. Wights And White Walkers Are The Same
This is something that has long caused confusion for many readers of the books, long before HBO's television series. In fact, the difference is possibly made clearer in the show, due to the creators being able to visually show what the two look like. The White Walkers (more commonly known as the Others in the books) are the strange, demonic necromancers that are spoken about only in hushed whispers and legends. Even in the books, very little is known about them so far, other than the fact they have the potential to be very dangerous. The Wights are the more commonly seen dead people (or animals) that have been brought back to life by the White Walkers. Essentially, they're just mindless zombies, controlled by the Walkers that raised them. While the Wights can be destroyed by fire, it's long been unknown how to dispatch a White Walker, which is why Sam managing to kill one was such a big deal. Sam unwittingly discovered that the White Walkers are susceptible to weaponry made from Obsidian (also called Dragonglass).
