10 Things You Need To Know About The Constantine Reboot

9. John Is Haunted... Obviously

The show will differ slightly in terms of John's own demons (or what we will get to see of them anyway), though the same bones will be there. In the pilot, John has voluntarily checked himself into Ravenscar Psychiatric Hospital, as he is haunted by the loss of a 9-year-old girl who was dragged to Hell by a demon that Constantine could not stop. He bears considerable scars from the incident, and it drives him. This is clearly based on the storyline from Hellblazer that focuses on a supernatural orgy in Newcastle, England that goes badly wrong: an abused child called Astra conjoured a demon to get revenge on the adults who were abusing her, which subsequently refused to leave. Constantine summoned his own monster to deal with it, but was never in control of it, and while it destroyed Astra's demon, it also dragged her to Hell. He suffers a mental breakdown, and is committed to Ravenscar, and blamed for Astra's murder, though he is freed later thanks to gangsters. In contrast, in the pilot, he will be able to check himself out after six months when he discovers that something in the supernatural world requires his attention. There's no word on whether the pilot will also explore his adrenaline addiction as another side of his motivation, but it fits somewhat with what we've seen of his attitude.
