10 Things You Need To Know About The Constantine Reboot
8. There's No Trench-Coat... To Begin With, At Least
Constantine's outfit is as iconic as his attitude, and though he has worn a number of outfits in the comic, mostly along the same lines, his one constant is the trench coat that is something of a calling card. According to the pilot script leak, Constantine won't be seen wearing the coat at first, but will later in the episode, presumably as the writers have decided to try and draw out the fan-pop. This brings up the question of the source in his characterisation. Although David S Goyer has said that Constantine's smoking (brand Silk Cut) was up for negotiation, you have to suspect that NBC will nix it:
"That's a tricky one on network TV. We're negotiating right now. He will have his signature trench coat and skinny tie. I would say that the show clings more closely to the sourse material then the film did. Even though the film was interesting."
Like it or not , the character's trademark chain-smoking may not make it to to the TV show, because networks are notoriously loathe to show such dirty habits, so as not to encourage people, and primarily kids, who definitely shouldn't be watching the show anyway. Goyer has also said that the show will stick as closely to the source as possible - though that's more likely the newer DC version, and not the Vertigo Comics version of the character - so hopefully we'll get at least an allusion to the character's inspiration - Sting. Without Sting, there would be no Constantine, as Alan Moore has openly stated in the past, and though the creator has said DC were always a little anxious about him suing, it would be great to see some sort of Easter Egg, or even a walk-on cameo from the former Police frontman.
