10 Things New Star Trek TV Show Must Have

Nemesis 145

Robert Orci could well have a great deal to answer for if those tweets that were splashed right across the internet recently aren't followed up with The Goods, and right soon.

His conversations with CBS are no doubt in very early stages but the fires have been successfully stoked. All you need to do is use the words "New", "Star" and "Trek" in a sentence to get fandom's ears pricked up and keyboards alight.

Since the final, dismal moments of These Are The Voyages we've been waiting for a new show to appear on our screens. Both George Takei and Michael Dorn have pitched in their two strips of latinum with concepts for a Sulu or Worf series respectively but neither has really evolved much further than discussion. Let's not forget the brilliant Netflix campaign to get a fifth season of Enterprise. It might happen but I fear holding my breath on that one could be fatal.

The 2009 reboot only assisted in raising more focus on the desire for Star Trek to return to the small screen especially as many fans were disappointed with the treatment that JJ Abrams had inferred on the franchise with the intention of opening it up to the wider, more action-demanding audience. While it was a massive commercial success, nothing appeared on those smaller screens in homes around the world. It seemed that Star Trek's future was purely limited to the cinema.

Then came Star Trek Into Darkness. Critically a mixed bag and a huge disappointment to fans, it still made a shed-load of cash which made a third outing only a matter of time. It also seems that CBS feel now is the time to look at putting Star Trek back where it began and many people have said it belongs €“ the TV screen.

Orci's credentials are impressive if a bit mixed. Both Star Trek movies are on his CV and sit alongside credits for Fringe, Michael Bay's Transformers, Alias, Xena, Hercules and Cowboys and Aliens (ok, let's walk away from the last one). He also gets a lot of stick from Star Trek fans for the direction he's assisted in taking the near-50 year old franchise since 2009.

Even getting into a room to talk about potentially making a Star Trek TV series is a massive step in the right direction so if Robert Orci happens to drop by WhatCulture! here's a few things I suspect he needs to consider before it gets in front of the cameras....

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
