10 Things New Star Trek TV Show Must Have

1. Amazing Costumes

William Ware Theiss has a lot to answer for here. He wrote the book on Star Trek costumes right from day one. Think back to some of the exotic outfits he created €“ Sherry Jackson in What Are Little Girls Made Of? Leslie Parrish in Who Mourns for Adonais? or Diana Ewing in The Cloudminders. All incredible creations utilising the Theiss Titillation Theory, and any designer will have a challenge to come up with anything close. He also needs to have a good understanding of how to defy gravity. There have been some bizarre creations in the 24th Century too especially on the Promenade of a former Cardassian mining station.

Wardrobe has been a big part of the show since the 1960's and there are stories galore about bits of everyday devices becoming a tube here or a something else there over the years. These costumes need to make a statement and definitely steer clear of the blacks and greys that pervaded the galaxy for JJ Abrams last two outings. Theiss never went for the conservative option and while the designs might have mellowed after his passing and certainly towards the latter end of The Next Generation it's time to bring back a Star Trek tradition.

Be risque, be 'out there' if you will, but make the costumes for guest characters memorable. Look at the Borg for example €“ it might be an all black ensemble but you remember the look, and the same goes for the Klingons, Romulans and everything thereafter. Just putting a great actress in something jaw-dropping isn't where it should end; this has to be a total visual experience and not one that relies on the power of the computers generating the effects in post production.

Then there's the classic uniform in there too. How would a new show steer this key piece of wardrobe? If it's a Starfleet crew then the yellow, blue and red are essential - beyond a question to be on screen.

So that's what I think. What do you think? feel free to comment!

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
