10 Things New Star Trek TV Show Must Have

2. Originality

No more Spock, Khan and signposted retreads €“ this has to be fresh, new and exciting. Telling the same stories again will just kill the show in a second and being original, thought provoking and mighty brilliant (!) are of course Star Trek hallmarks. It's a big negative pinned to the re-vitalised Star Trek in the two last movies. This was a new timeline, yet fans wanted the mystery of new creations the ship would encounter and not just a few new aliens on the bridge.

Please, please please avoid cliched storylines €“ keep away from the mundane that's bogged down many a potentially good show and even had a good go at Enterprise's second season. Look at Deep Space Nine for instance with Far Beyond The Stars or Sisko's actions from In The Pale Moonlight. Voyager too had its fair share of concepts in there too with Living Witness and even Timeless being great episodic examples of pushing the boundaries. Just stay away from anyone who's pitched to Joss Whedon recently....

Enterprise certainly attempted to tip the scales with the Similitude clone story and let us not forget the multitiude of examples that Roddenberry brought to the screen with the original crew. Plato's Stepchildren, The Empath, Miri; even The Cage can be seen as fine storytelling that challenged existing conceptions when originally broadcast. This new show can't be scared to test the waters €“ playing it safe is not Star Trek and there have to be off-the-wall moments in there too. After all, it's not serious and mind-challenging all the time in deep space.

With the advances in CGI alone just think of the possibilities that weren't even dreamed of back in the final days of Enterprise; there really would be whole new worlds out there made on a fraction of the budget to physically build every week. I thin we can be certain they would look a lot different to some of the efforts we saw in shows such as Babylon 5 (which I love and this is not a put down!).

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
