10 Things New Star Trek TV Show Must Have
7. More Story, Less Action
This isn't a big screen outing, it's going to have a smaller budget but still needs to think big even in such austere times. The two reboot movies certainly moved (kicked) the benchmark for Star Trek effects expectations and a TV series could never match but it has to try. The movies have been about getting people interested in JJ's vision of the Star Trek universe, but now the demand for the series is from the loyal fan base. These are the guys who will be your bread and butter for the best part of the next decade, so it can only pay to listen to them, look at the characters for your stories and don't rely on Mr Special Effects and his box of tricks to win us over with fancy tricks. This is Star Trek, not The Untouchables. The movies have done a fine job but they are more about the effects and the spectacle of the big screen than the characters. Star Trek is meant for TV.
Now we're not saying that action isn't an important element when taken in small amounts. Wouldn't it be great to have an occasional story written by Ronald D Moore, Ira Steven Behr or even Brannon Braga? Would these writers help ground the show and reassure fans that the franchise is in good hands.
Themes and issues have always been at the forefront of Star Trek be it a god complex, sexual relations, the rights and wrongs or morality, there's always been a point and also a character focus each week. Each episode needs to spotlight Captain X or First Officer Y after all they might only have 13 episodes a year to get the message across. We want to understand these people and let's steer clear of having one character with a mystery background that takes 12 weeks to uncover and is an utter disappointment. It's an old trick these days.
