10 Things New Star Trek TV Show Must Have
8. A New Crew
And make it a diverse and interesting one at that, please. Could we even suggest that alongside the different races, religions and ethnic groups we get our first gay crewmember? I would even say this is an absolute essential to whatever vision is created for the next voyages. We also need that Human Condition character that the reboot Spock just missed. We need our Nimoy-Spock, the Data, the Odo, the Seven of Nine who will examine what it means to be human through its flaws and successes. This needs to be a character who will develop across the show and be our viewpoint from the start.
Not only must this all happen but the crew doesn't need to be cast from TV or cinematic superstars. Steer clear of the movie crew and go for actors who are known for producing top notch work, will start at a 10 and only get better from there. A mixed crew who can grow as the series expands is a must and recent examples such as Agents of SHIELD have proved that a great idea needs that solid base of good characters played by strong actors.
While it would be a good move to keep a Vulcan or an Andorian in there we need to see some new and exciting races as part of the initial set up. The Next Generation had a Betazoid, Deep Space Nine had Odo and the Bajorans, Neelix and Kes were in Voyager's set up. Let's see what Orci can produce here don't forget that his two movie outings have both focused on existing elements of the Star Trek prime universe and this would be his first foray into (we hope) new worlds and new civilisations.
