10 Things That Date Friends Terribly

5. Using A Payphone Or Answering Machine

So many things in Friends could have been prevented if they'd just all had cell phones. Rachel's drunken phone call to Ross in Season 2 Episode 7 wouldn't have gone through to the machine in an empty apartment, but to his phone where he would probably have told her to call him tomorrow when she wasn't so drunk.

Phoebe would never have been stuck in the apartment on hold, and Monica would never gone through all that emotional turmoil with Richard's messages and told him how "breezy" she was. There's something tragically unromantic about leaving messages on the object of your desire's answering machine, or desperately scrambling around in the rain to get the change together to call them from a street payphone, but the fact remains that both devices have been completely replaced since the show first aired.

New York's currently in the midst of a huge plan to replace a lot of remaining payphones with superfast wifi hubs. The One Where Ross Finds Out probably wouldn't have been as dramatic if Rachel spent the night looking for one so she could tweet him.
